Cartoon Network, the world's first 24 hour channel dedicated to animation hit the airwaves on this day in 1992 - a whole 32 years ago.

When I was a kid growing up, I was fortunate to have watched the majority of Cartoon Network's initial output of original programming like Johnny Bravo, The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory, alongside a healthy sprinkling of classic theatrical cartoons like Tom & Jerry and The Looney Tunes. These pieces of media captured my imagination at a very crucial, formative period in my development.

Upon reflecting on these shows, I realise just how many invaluable lessons, nuggets of wisdom and tools to orient understanding, I took away from them even without actively trying to learn anything.

Whether these shows' creators intended to impact their audiences to the extent they did or not, I can't help but be grateful that they pursued their passions and creative vision to create something that helped form a child's ability to make sense of the world. I was absorbing new ideas, gaining insight into different ways of thinking, and most importantly being entertained.

Art is such a powerful force. The often repeated quote "Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable." comes to mind. The majority of material that is influencing children today is designed to be highly addictive, to keep them distracted and provides no beneficial intellectual stimulation and all of it available on demand.

I'm just glad I caught the Cartoon Network I did, with the shows it had at the time. We are at the end of the day, the culmination of our influences and Cartoon Network was invaluable in shaping me.
